Workshop on Workshops: The Demystification, Deconstruction and Creation of a Workshop

Friday, April 28, 2023 , 9:00 am 4:00 pm

A workshop facilitator is sometimes a magician, storyteller, educator, community builder, and curator of lively learning environments. In the Workshop on Workshops training, Laurie Kahn (she/her), LCPC, founder of Womencare, a national and international presenter, will work with therapists to embrace and cultivate these different roles.

Workshop on Workshops will provide guidelines for developing workshops consistent with the state of Illinois CEU guidelines that touch the hearts and minds of others.  Therapists are asked to bring a topic they are considering developing, or already developed that evolved from their curiosity and passion.

They will invest in themselves as facilitators, while Laurie guides them towards demystifying the role of facilitator, moving into a collaborative teaching process, and cultivating their workshop topic from an idea to a presentation.

Objectives:

I. Philosophy

We will explore a model of training that promotes workshops that are 50 % content and 50% experiential, while stressing a relational frame that emphasizes a “power-with” experience rather than a “power-over” approach.

II. Structure

We will discuss the Arc of a workshop, including pacing, the integration of content and process, and how to create a dynamic outline and critical objectives.

III. The Trainer

Collectively, we will explore the challenges of moving from imposter to centered, grounded facilitator.

Goals:

  • To identify a relational frame within the context of creating a workshop, with an emphasis on collaboration versus expert/ power-over.
  • To understand how to implement pacing in the integration of content and process.
  • To create a dynamic outline and set of objectives.
  • To develop the confidence and competence of the facilitator.

$145/$175, includes 6 CEUs (available to LSWs/LCSWs, LPCs/LCPCs, LMFTs, PhDs and PsyDs).  A limited number of partial scholarships are available.

Therapists are asked to bring a topic they are considering developing or already developed that evolved from their curiosity and passion.
