The Relational Tri-Phasic Model in Practice: A Two-Part Series

The tri-phasic model is a powerful tool, but what does it look like in the room? How do we establish a therapeutic relationship with survivors of childhood sexual abuse who have experienced harm within their earliest relationships?

We are offering two relational workshops to explore the practical challenges and strategies of working with survivors of childhood sexual abuse. These workshops are intended to move beyond theory and offer clinicians the opportunity to explore the craft and skill of the tri-phasic model as it unfolds in the room, with particular attention to pacing and the therapeutic frame.

Although registration for both is encouraged, it is not required. This series is not a didactic lecture; it is a relational workshop where participants will be asked to engage in experiential learning through activities and small-group reflection.

Part One

The Pace of Hope: The Relational Tri-Phasic Model in Practice

Presented by Judith Ierulli, LCSW

This workshop is intended for therapists at the beginning of their work with adult survivors of sexual abuse.

The tri-phasic model gives us a clear framework for working with clients who have experienced early childhood trauma, regardless of what modality you are using. When working with survivors of childhood sexual abuse, a clear framework is just the beginning.

We will offer an in-depth exploration of pacing and relational issues that arise during each stage of the tri-phasic model to better meet and measure treatment as stewards and guardians of our clients’ hope.

This workshop will address how to respond to the pacing needs in the room and build a resilient therapeutic relationship by exploring:

  • An Overview Of The Tri-Phasic Model In Application
  • Pacing Within The Session
  • The Client’s Use And Challenge of Shame and Dissociation

We will begin by establishing a common understanding of the tri-phasic model, then explore our shared knowledge and experience through a combination of lecture and small-group discussion. This workshop provides a roadmap for understanding the bumpy road of the treatment process of CSA.

Part Two

Where Are We in the Treatment Frame?: The Relational Tri-Phasic Model in Practice

Presented by Judith Ierulli, LCSW, and Meredith Glick, LCSW

Hope comes from the belief that clients can experience change and that someone can care for them without it being exploitative and harmful. When working with survivors of childhood sexual abuse, we are given the honor of witnessing our clients’ stories.

Sexual trauma undermines agency, erodes trust, and steals dignity from the survivors.  The damage may be especially pervasive and relationally devastating, particularly when the abuse occurs during vulnerable stages of development and within a caretaking relationship.

This workshop will be focused on practical challenges and innumerable impasses encountered in the Tri-Pasic model related to the therapeutic frame, including:

  • The Common and Complicated Relational Dynamics in Therapy
  • Staying on Goals: Invitations to Avoid and the Richness of Unexpected Exploration
  • Working with Triggers Within the Therapeutic Relationship

This workshop is intended for clinicians with experience working with adult survivors of CSA. This workshop will explore advanced topics through role-plays by presenters and group reflection to explore the challenges and opportunities that arise within the therapeutic frame.

Yet she also knows healing is possible.

Meredith Glick is a board member of a local chapter of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation and provides consultation to therapists in the field.
